Foodplus
The challenge
We are solving 2 problems at once: one of food wastage from farms and supermarkets (which accounts for 55% of all wasted food) and one of malnutrition. Each year, more than 250,000 tonnes of food are thrown away before it reaches the consumer while 2 million Britons are malnourished and forced to missed meals due to in-affordability. To measure in economic terms, 250 million pounds are thrown into the bin while malnutrition costs the NHS more than 12 billion annually. Looking at the broader picture, more than 800 million people are malnourished globally, all while 130 billions tonnes of food is discarded(FAO).
The solution
Foodplus is about converting surplus perishable food and vegetables that will otherwise be thrown away into nutritionally complete food that can replace meals. Foodplus collects post best-before-date food but edible food from supermarkets and farms and converts the produces into a fruit and vegetable powder. With a customised powder made of selected grains, Foodplus combines both powders and nutritional supplements to offer consumers a wholesome meal for any time of the day. Foodplus will focus on developing high protein content products which are more environmentally sustainable.
